such situations, PDQ recommends treatment options by those factors. When there is no effective standard therapy, the PDQ recommendation is for doctors and their patients to consider clinical trials that are evaluating new approaches to treatment.
Format The treatment information in PDQ is provided in two formats:
• state-of-the-art statements written for health care professionals using detailed medical terminology; and
• patient information summaries that health professionals can share with patients when discussing the prognosis
and treatment options. These summaries are written in simpler language and contain references to additional
printed materials written for cancer patients. The summaries are designed to complement discussion with a
doctor rather than serve as a primary source of treatment advice. A doctor will know facts about an individual
patient's condition that may affect the selection of treatment.
The diagnosis of cancer and subsequent decisions about therapy can be overwhelming, and patients are often confused and upset. It is important for patients to discuss treatment options with medical experts and with family or close friends. Doctors and patients (and their families) can use the material in the PDQ patient information summaries as an educational resource to promote understanding of the diagnosis and treatment options. The treatment recommendations in this book have been written for patients and their families based on the treatment information provided in PDQ.
